Safeguarding

How We Keep Children Safe at Butler’s Hill

At Butler’s Hill Infant and Nursery School, keeping children safe is at the heart of everything we do. We want every child to feel happy, secure and confident to speak up.

Children know they are listened to

  • Every child has trusted adults they can talk to
  • We teach children to share worries and ask for help
  • Our School Council regularly talks about how to stay safe

“If I feel worried, I tell my teacher or go to the Rainbow Room.” – Pupil voice

We teach children how to stay safe

  • Online safety is taught through our curriculum (including Purple Mash)
  • PSHE lessons help children understand feelings, friendships and boundaries
  • OPAL play supports children to take safe risks and build confidence

“We learn how to stay safe online and what to do if something pops up.” – Pupil voice

We have clear systems to protect children

  • All staff are trained in safeguarding and know what to do if they have a concern
  • We record and respond to concerns quickly using secure systems
  • Designated Safeguarding Leads are always available in school

 We work closely with families

  • We share advice and support with parents
  • We listen and act quickly if concerns are raised
  • We work together to keep children safe in school and at home

We work with other professionals

Prevent Duty and Anti-Radicalisation Statement

Butler’s Hill Infant and Nursery School

At Butler’s Hill Infant and Nursery School, we are fully committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all our children. Protecting pupils from the risk of radicalisation or extremism is an important part of our overall safeguarding responsibilities and is set out in the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015, which places a duty on schools to “have due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism.” This is known as the Prevent Duty.

Our Commitment

We ensure that:

  • All staff understand their responsibilities under the Prevent Duty and are trained to recognise signs of radicalisation, extremist views or vulnerabilities in young children and families.

  • Safeguarding procedures are in place to respond swiftly and appropriately to any concerns, following our Child Protection and Safeguarding Policy.

  • We promote children’s wellbeing, safety and resilience through our curriculum, assemblies, Jigsaw PSHE, British Values, and day-to-day school culture.

  • We actively foster an environment where children learn to be caring, creative and confident, respectful of others, and curious about the world in a safe and age-appropriate way.

How We Reduce Risks

We help children become secure, thoughtful and resilient learners by:

  • Teaching age-appropriate PSHE and safeguarding themes, including friendship, respect, feelings, difference and keeping safe.

  • Promoting the Fundamental British Values of democracy, rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs.

  • Providing safe online learning through supervised access and teaching children how to use technology carefully and responsibly.

  • Ensuring all staff are confident in recognising early indicators of radicalisation, including changes in behaviour, language or family circumstances.

Working with Families and the Community

We recognise the important role parents and carers play in safeguarding. We:

  • Work closely with families to build positive relationships and share concerns early.

  • Collaborate with the Local Authority Prevent Team, safeguarding partners and other professionals when needed.

  • Signpost families to support services where appropriate.

Reporting Concerns

If a member of staff has a concern that a child or family may be at risk of radicalisation, this is reported immediately to our Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) team who follow the school’s safeguarding procedures and seek advice from the Nottinghamshire MASH or Prevent Team if required.

Key Contacts

  • Headteacher / DSL: Rachel Hallam

  • Deputy DSLs: Vicki Siddons, Janet Radford, Emily Cunnington, Rebecca Chumun
